Mr. & Ms. Island Fire Winners

< Garner, NC, – Eight contestants competed for Island Fire titles on Saturday, July 25th, at 4:30 pm at the Garner Historic Auditorium in Garner, NC. Contestants ranged from an age of 13 years old to 38 years old and consisted of both male and female. Contestants traveled from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands; Tampa, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Wendell, NC; and Raleigh, NC and represented these Caribbean islands: St. Croix; St. Thomas; St. Kitts & Nevis; Antigua; Trinidad & Tobago; and St. Martin. Competitive categories were: Introduction; Caribbean Wear; Talent; Formal Wear; and Educational Forum.
The pageant was graced with the presence of elected official Senator Terrence “Positive” Nelson of the 28th Legislature of the US Virgin Islands; Senator Nelson was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Separate from the performances by the contestants, the program consisted of a costume debut, fashion show, and performances by Abbey Kyat, Cocoanut Lady, and Sparkles & Empress Auset of Positively Nelsons.

About the Mr. & Ms. Island Fire Pageant - Due to the lack of knowledge, events and means of promoting the Caribbean culture in the Raleigh NC and surrounding areas, the first Caribbean pageant, Ms. Island Queen was held in 1998. As knowledge of the pageant circulated the area, men also became interested in this event. As a result, the first Annual Mr. and Ms. Island Fire pageant was established in November 2000. The men, women, boys and girls compete against each other within their respective age categories. The age range for contestants is 10 - 12 yrs (Prince and Princess); 13 - 17 yrs (Jr. Mr. and Jr. Miss); 18 - 45 yrs (Mr. and Ms.). Contestants do not have to be a native of the Caribbean; however, they have to have some form of exposure to the Caribbean culture via personal experience, upbringing, knowledge gained from family/friends or research. Winners receive a cash prize, crown, trophy and sash.
